About the Tony Elumelu Foundation TEF Entrepreneurship $5000 grant Programme, mentorship, training and more

Since its inception in 2015, the TEF Entrepreneurship Programme – Africa’s only African-funded entrepreneurship catalyst – has provided non-returnable seed capital of $5,000, twelve weeks of business management training, access to professional experts, and membership to Africa’s largest entrepreneurial ecosystem to 15,847 African entrepreneurs.

For its 2021 Entrepreneurship Programme, the Tony Elumelu Foundation distributed USD$24.75 million to 5000 African businesses across Africa in 2021. Given the effects of the covid19 pandemic across Africa, the Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Program remains one of the largest private sector solutions to supporting the economic recovery of African youth, women, and SMEs. Beneficiaries of the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Program are launching and expanding groundbreaking enterprises that have produced over 400,000 direct and indirect jobs across Africa.

According to Hauwa Liman, a female company owner and the founder of Afrik Abaya, a 2015 Tony Elumelu Entrepreneur, “I am always happy to state that I am from the initial cohort of the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme.” My company is based in Kaduna, Nigeria’s northernmost city. In 2015, I benefited from this program, which opened up many doors and chances for me. The Program intrigues me not just because of the seed capital, but also because of the information. It’s what I call a mini-MBA program because it teaches you how to truly describe your business right from the start, and it gave me my first business plan. The prospects, network, and visibility are limitless.

Without the Tony Elumelu Foundation, my entrepreneurship experience would be incomplete. Thanks to the Foundation, I will soon be able to sell to other nations. We now have ten full-time employees and another eight on a commission basis.”

Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu, CEO of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, said of the inauguration of the 2022 Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme, “We are continually blown away by the quality of firms that come from Africa every year.” This inspires us to further up our efforts to help even more enterprises across the continent. African entrepreneurs’ creativity, knowledge, and perseverance are critical in charting Africa’s socioeconomic revolution and achieving the continent’s development goals.

We’re also pleased of the rise in female participation in our Program, particularly in the 2021 cohort, when a record 68 percent of females entrepreneurs were chosen.”

“Through the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme, we want to democratize luck,” said Dr. A V. Elumelu, a founding trustee of the Tony Elumelu Foundation. Hard effort is undeniably necessary, but one must not overlook the importance of luck – someone willing to take a chance on you or your company concept by providing you with training, mentorship, or finance. Our hope is that the Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme would assist the next generation of business leaders and captains of industry in being who they were born to be. This is our way of giving back while also empowering future generations to achieve even greater heights than we have.

As a parent, you want your children to achieve better than you, therefore you will equip them with the resources and materials they need to succeed in life. At the Foundation, we’re doing the same thing by giving the next generation the skills they need to succeed.”
